The Home Battery Rewards Program is a positive step in reaching Hawaii’s 100% renewable energy goals. By joining the Home Battery Rewards Program, you become a part of a network of home battery systems that generate, store, and return energy to the grid. When there is not enough or too much energy supply, the fleet of home batteries can respond and help balance the electrical grid.

Home Battery Rewards Program Q & A
Get paid to join a network of homes that generate, store, and return energy to the grid.
The amount you’re paid to participate depends on your system size, kWh produced, and time of use depending on grid demand. You will get an estimated range of savings when you enroll and you will see your fixed monthly payment on your utility bill after you enroll.
The Home Battery Rewards Program will have a special itemized line on your bill. Your bill will be reduced by the amount of the incentive including all kWh charges and the monthly service charges. If your incentive exceeds your minimum bill you will receive a check from Hawaiian Electric enclosed with your monthly bill for the remaining value of the incentive net of bill credits.

You must have a Solar + Tesla Powerwall System and be a Hawaiian Electric customer on Oahu, Maui, or the Big Island. You must unenroll from any other utility energy efficiency programs (i.e HECO’s “Energy Scout” Program).
Swell Energy partners with your utility to manage your system as well as all participants in the Home Battery Rewards Program in response to a specific need on the grid. This includes holding energy in the battery to be able to respond to grid conditions, taking excess energy off the grid, or shifting energy from your battery to your home and the grid. The value of the program is based on the fact that your system can intelligently respond in real time.
The incentive can reduce your payment to zero each month. Any additional incentive will be sent to you by check along with your HECO bill each month.
Your system will continue to work as it always has providing you power security.
Swell will intelligently manage your system for the duration of the program to maximize the value of your normal operations and Home Battery Rewards benefits each day. As a result, changes you make in the Tesla app won't change the way your system operates while in the program.

Currently the program is enrolling HECO customers who have solar installed on their homes with a Tesla Powerwall battery. We can install solar plus a Tesla Powerwall for homeowners without it who want to participate in the program. You can opt-out of the program at any time. There is no penalty for leaving and you will NOT be required to repay any funds received while in the program.
